We will begin in this chapter by dealing with some general quantum mechanical ideas. Some of the statements will be quite precise, others only partially precise. It will be hard to tell you as we go along which is which, but by the time you have finished the rest of the book, you will understand in looking back which parts hold up and which parts were only explained roughly.

In second semester of second year, you will choose whether to move directly to final year or to take a 11 month work placement.
In your final year you will be able to specialise in one of five key areas of business: Finance |
The course is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in teaching Business Studies to higher leaving certificate level. Sometimes people ring up to say the Teaching Council website says that they can teach Accounting and Economics. In this case say that the Council has included stricter conditions requiring a subject (eg Economics) to constitute at least 30% of a degree. While there is no difficulty in proving that a BBS graduate has a degree with at least 30% Business, it is more difficult to make a case for Accounting are final year specialisms. As Business Economics is now a final year specialism, we hope the Teaching Council will now recognise those students who take this specialism as qualified to teach Business and Economics at second level. |
Depending on the specialisms taken you may qualify for exemptions from the examinations of professional bodies in Marketing and Accounting.

If you opt to do Finance in final year you can receive some exemptions but this is subject to approval by relevant Accounting bodies. Subject to approval, BS students who specialise in Finance are eligible to apply for the CAP1 Finance exemption from Chartered Accountants Ireland.

Your application would be reviewed and considered by the programme chair on the basis of your performance, availability of places in the Business Studies course and similarity of course material.
Business Studies is the largest programme in DCU so we only accept a very small number of transfer students into BS each year. The criteria used to assess applications are as follows: (a) availability of places; (b) compatibility of the applicant's current programme content with DC111; and (c) the applicant's performance on their programme to date. If you wish to apply, please complete the transfer form on the DCU Registry web page http://www.dcu.ie/registry/forms/pdfs/R10.pdf. The closing date for transfers in July 1st and no applications are considered before this date. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by the end of July. At present we do have links with Colaiste Dhulaigh in Coolock where we allow direct entry into Year 2 of BS in DCU subject to students attaining a distinction in the FETAC level 6 Business Studies course in Colaiste Dhulaigh. |
Students taking the Business Studies degree are entitled to apply for exemptions from certain professional bodies such as CIMA and CAI. These exemptions are subject to annual review and revision by the professional associations. Last year the Business Studies programme underwent considerable revision and changes were made to core modules and final year specialisms. We submitted the revised structure for approval by CAI and they have decided that they will award the CAP1 exemption in Finance to BS students as follows: "We will award exemption from Finance for students graduating in 2014 and 2015 who have an overall 2.2. degree with a clear pass (without compensation) in the relevant modules with a pass mark of 50% in module EF209 Financial Management". Graduates 2014: Modules are AC115/AC116; EF209/EF307/EF306 Graduates 2015: Modules are AC115/AC116: EF209/EF307/EF309 Therefore, if you choose the revised Finance specialism and meet the above criteria, you will be eligible for the CAP1 exemption in Finance. (This refers to the Finance specialism) |
No you do not need to do business studies in the leaving cert to do this course.

[The minimum general entry requirement for entry to DCU is the equivalent to a Leaving Certificate grade C3 in two higher level subjects and grade D3 in four ordinary or higher level subjects, to include Mathematics and either English or Irish.
Main difference is that Global Business is a double-degree. Upon successful completion of the programme students are awarded with a degree from DCU - and also from the partner university (In Germany, Spain, France, Canada or US). 2) There are no work placements on INTB. On Global Business there are two, - one in Ireland in year 2 of the programme and another one whilst abroad (in year 3 or 4). 3) Finally, on INTB students spend only year 3 abroad, before returning to DCU for final year. On Global Business they spend 2 years abroad (years 3 & 4). In Global Business, Language and culture: For students on DC112, DC113 and DC114, the course includes the study of European political, cultural and social developments. These are combined with the study of French, German or Spanish, which will be your working language of Years Three and Four of the course. Overseas students have the opportunity to learn another European Language or Chinese in Years One and Two. Students on the USA and Canada courses, study North American history, politics and business practice, and also have the option to study a second language. |
